The DMV driver’s license renewal process can be done multiple ways depending on your state. Most states require you to renew your driver’s license every four to eight years, and some states make this margin even less depending on the age of the driver.

Regardless of how long your license is valid, everyone will need to renew their license sooner or later. One of the most important things to keep in mind is that you should apply for a driver’s license renewal before your license expires.

License Set to Expire? Find Out How To Renew It!

Some states allow you to apply for a renewal up to three months before your license expires to ensure that you will not have to pay a late fee or deal with an expired credential.

To apply for a DMV driver’s license renewal, you will need to visit your local DMV office and fill out a renewal form. You will need to present the same documents you used to receive a new driver’s license and you will also need to pay a renewal fee. This fee varies by state.

Some states allow drivers to renew their driver’s license online, while others only allow drivers to renew their license in person at a DMV office. However, even states that allow online driver’s license renewals will not offer this service consecutively.

For example, if you used the online renewal service the last time you renewed your license, the following time you need to renew your license you may need to visit a DMV office instead to update your photo or retake an eye exam if it has been too long.

Be sure to check how your state conducts license renewals before you decide on which method to use.
