Homeowners insurance protects you financially if something bad happens to your home. It can cover hotel costs if your home is too damaged to stay in, personal belongings if your house is broken into, legal expenses if you’re sued for a home-related accident, or damages from weather or a natural disaster. While the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) does not offer homeowners insurance, Veterans and active-duty members can still access high-quality and affordable homeowners insurance military discounts.
Some companies offer insurance benefits exclusively to Veterans, Servicemembers and their families, like USAA and Armed Forces Insurance (AFI). However, most insurance companies will offer special military discounts of up to 15% off insurance policies for Veterans and Servicemembers. And, if you have purchased a house with a VA-backed home loan, mortgage lenders oftentimes have special relationships with certain insurance providers who have policies especially for military personnel.
It’s always worth asking your lender for military-friendly recommendations.
Here are some additional tips to help you find good homeowners insurance for service members and veterans:
1. Shop around and compare rates.
2. Consider raising your deductible. With a higher deductible, you may get a lower monthly premium.
3. Bundle your homeowners insurance with your other insurance, like your auto insurance.
4. Have a good security system at home. You may be able to get an additional discount if you have a safe and secure home.
Like homeowners insurance, the VA does not directly offer car insurance to Veterans and other military personnel — but there are plenty of military friendly car insurance discounts and exclusive special offers.
