Whether you have recently been discharged from active-duty and you’re interested in beginning a new career, or you have been home with your family for many years and are interested in enhancing your knowledge in a favorite subject, there are numerous ways Veterans like you can get monetary assistance to pay for your education.

Sometimes, you may even be able to earn a completely free degree. Through special grants and education assistance programs offered through the VA, you can get help paying for college, graduate school, certificate programs, vocational programs, or even on-the-job training.

Sometimes, you can even transfer your education benefits to your spouse or children. 

The primary way Veterans can access educational assistance is through the VA’s GI Bill Program. Here are some ways to save on education through the GI Bill: 

  • Post-9/11 GI Bill 

If you served on active-duty sometime after September 10, 2001, you may qualify for the Post-9/11 GI Bill, also known as Chapter 33. This program can help you pay for school or job training with free monthly cash benefits

If you qualify for the Post-9/11 GI Bill and you choose to attend public in-state school, all your tuition and fees will be covered

However, if you choose to go to a private or foreign school, you can earn up to a total of $25,162 per academic year in monthly payments over 36 months to pay for: 

  • Tuition and fees,
  • housing, 
  • books and supplies, and
  • travel costs if you are moving from a rural area for school.
