How driver's licenses work in Balatro gameplay
In Balatro, a driver's license is a joker card — one of the special modifier cards that sit outside your main poker hand and affect how points are calculated. When you have a driver's license joker in play, it changes the scoring of specific poker hands or card combinations.
The exact effect depends on which version of the game you own and whether updates have changed the card's mechanics. Like all jokers in Balatro, you find it by opening booster packs during a run, and you can choose whether to add it to your hand or skip it. Once you have it in play, it stays active for the rest of that run unless you sell it for money.
Where to find a driver's license card during a run
You do not unlock a driver's license by meeting prerequisites outside the game. Instead, you encounter it randomly as you play. During each run, you will reach points where you can open booster packs — these are the moments where new cards become available to you.
A driver's license may appear in one of those packs. If it does, you can choose to take it, leave it, or take a different card from the same pack. There is no way to may provide you will see it in a particular run, and no separate menu or shop where you can purchase it with real money or in-game currency outside of a run.
What the driver's license card does
The driver's license modifies your score when you play certain poker hands. The specific hands it affects and how much it changes your score can vary. In some versions of Balatro, it may boost the score of a pair; in others, it might affect a different hand type entirely.
Because Balatro receives updates, the card's effect may change over time. If you want to know the current effect, check the card's description when you encounter it in a booster pack during gameplay, or consult the game's patch notes on the official Balatro website or Steam page.
How driver's licenses differ from other Balatro cards
Balatro contains three main card types: your poker hand (numbered cards and face cards), tarot cards (which modify cards in your hand), and jokers (which modify how your entire hand scores). A driver's license is a joker, so it works differently from a regular playing card.
Unlike tarot cards, which you use once and then discard, a joker stays in play for the entire run once you add it. You can sell it for money if you need cash to buy other cards, but you cannot use it and then get it back. This makes choosing which jokers to keep one of the main strategic decisions in Balatro.
If you need a real driver's license instead
If you arrived here looking for information about obtaining a real driver's license for driving a vehicle, you will need to contact your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or equivalent agency. Each state has different requirements for age, testing, documentation, and fees.
