There are numerous methods and programs available to citizens of the United States that can help needy families receive cash benefits to pay for groceries. If you live below the poverty line, methods like self-discipline and frugality can only go so far, and sometimes you need financial assistance in order to take care of your family.

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program is a government funded organization providing this type of help, and more, for families struggling to make ends meet. Through TANF, you can get the cash assistance you need to pay for groceries.

The mission of TANF is to provide short-term financial assistance, and provide programs and initiatives to help you gain long-term independence and stability.

So, the primary purpose of TANF is to help needy families achieve self-sufficiency. The federal government outlines four primary goals for the TANF program as:

  1. Provide cash assistance to needy families to help them remain in their homes.
  2. End family dependence on benefits by encouraging job preparation.
  3. Reduce out-of-wedlock marriages, which is considered a driver of poverty.
  4. Encourage the institution and maintenance of two-parent families.

TANF is administered by the Office of Family Assistance (OFA), which is overseen by the larger Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Each state has its own specific TANF program. If you are interested in receiving TANF benefits, you will have to look up the TANF program that is specific to your state. Some state TANF programs go by their own state program names.
