Sine the pandemic began, the U.S. government has sent out three rounds of stimulus payments, and more may be on the way. The government sends these checks in three different ways. The first two ways to get your stimulus check are by paper check or a prepaid debit card. Both are sent through the mail, which can take weeks to reach you.
But the fastest and easiest way to get your stimulus money is through direct deposit. If you get your stimulus money through direct deposit, you will receive it sooner than others who do not have direct deposit set up with the IRS. It is the best option for convenience and speed, letting you get your money up to weeks earlier.
Getting your stimulus check through direct deposit is the quickest and most convenient way to get your money. With direct deposit, you will:
- Get stimulus payments up to weeks earlier.
- Avoid having to go to the bank and waiting for the check to process.
- Prevent your check from being lost or stolen in the mail.
How can you get your stimulus money automatically deposited?
If you chose to get your 2019 or 2018 tax refund through direct deposit, then the IRS already has your bank account information on file. You will get your stimulus money automatically in this same bank account.
So if you received your 2019 or 2018 tax refund through direct deposit, you do not need to do anything else to get your stimulus check automatically deposited.
You also do not need to do anything if you get certain federal benefits through direct deposit. This includes benefits from the Social Security Administration or Veterans Affairs.
What if I did not complete a 2019 or 2018 tax return?
If you did not file 2019 or 2018 taxes and therefore do not already have your bank account information on file with the IRS, you have some other options!
If you were not required to file a 2019 or 2018 tax return, then the IRS will not have your direct deposit information. You can still take a step to make sure you get any stimulus payments you are owed through direct deposit.
Non-filers as well as regular filers can use the IRS Free File tool to file a 2020 tax return and get stimulus money through direct deposit.
