The education benefits offered by the VA can help Veterans, Servicemembers and qualified family members pay for college. They also can help find schools and training programs and get career counseling. There are even some education benefits specifically for the dependents and survivors of military personnel.
The biggest education benefit program is the GI Bill. The GI Bill helps Veterans and their family members receive cash assistance to pay for some or all of undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, or training programs.
There are several different types of GI Bill. The most popular one is the Post-9/11 GI Bill. It provides funds to help you pay for tuition and fees, housing, books and supplies. It also provides $500 to help you move from a rural area to attend your school.
To qualify for the GI Bill, you must have been an active-duty servicemember or Veteran, a member of the National Guard or Reserves, or a qualified survivor or dependent. And, if you were a servicemember, you must have been honorably discharged.
Once you qualify for the GI Bill, you can use the cash funds to:

- Pay for correspondence training
- Pay for tutorial assistance

- Pay for work study
- Pay for co-op training
- Pay for on-the-job training
